Opera in seven scenes by Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881). Libretto by the composer, based on the drama by Alexander Pushkin.
An extraordinary portrait of a manipulative tyrant who is himself trapped in the machinery of power. The tyrant’s fall is partly inspired by the composer’s own mental breakdown and alcoholism.
